Returning to management with Portadown, 63-year-old David Jeffrey is looking forward to leading the team into its next chapter. Jeffrey, who has over two decades of experience in the Irish League, is set to bring a wealth of knowledge back to the club he once played for and managed earlier in his career. After stepping away from management for three years, Jeffrey is now ready to take on the challenge with renewed vigor.
Jeffrey's appointment as Portadown manager was not made lightly. He took several weeks to fully appreciate the privilege of this new role, especially considering that his partner Rose was recovering from breast cancer. “It was a very considered decision,” he told reporters. “My partner Rose was recovering from breast cancer and thank God she is in a good place. That was pivotal.”
The club's rich history and the legacy left by Ronnie McFall, who transformed Portadown into one of the most successful teams in the Irish League, are key factors that have caught Jeffrey’s attention. “The history of the club is amazing, particularly what Ronnie McFall did was outstanding,” he said. “It is a club with a history and heritage.”
With six new players joining the squad this season, Portadown is looking to build on their eighth-place finish from last year. Jeffrey believes that the team’s strong leadership group will help them avoid a relegation battle in the upcoming campaign.
Former Ports player Philip Major echoed similar sentiments, praising the current dressing room environment and the leadership within the squad. “I think Portadown will be OK this season,” he said. “One thing they had last season and retained this season is a really good leadership group amongst the players. I don't think David Jeffrey will change a lot as they have good leaders. I always look at their dressing room and think it is a good dressing room.”
Jeffrey's return to Portadown marks an exciting new chapter for both him and the club, with high hopes for a successful season ahead.
