Portadown suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to Linfield on Friday night, a result that sent the visitors to the top of the Premiership. The hosts led early in the second half but were undone by two goals from the Blues in a tight contest at Shamrock Park.

Kennedy penalty gives Portadown lead

After a goalless first half, Portadown were awarded a penalty three minutes after the restart when Chris Shields fouled Eamon Fyfe. Ben Kennedy stepped up and sent his spot-kick past Chris Johns to give the home side the advantage. That lead lasted just eight minutes before Rhys Brennan equalised for Linfield, finishing coolly after a flick-on from Matt Fitzpatrick.

Portadown defended resolutely under pressure but were finally breached with ten minutes remaining. Kyle McClean's corner was not cleared and Fitzpatrick forced the ball home at the back post. James Teelan went close to an equaliser in added time, but Aaron McCarey's goal remained unbreached.

Table position and upcoming games

The loss leaves Portadown in ninth place in the 12-team Premiership with 18 points from 21 matches. They are now eight points clear of the relegation play-off spot but have played two more games than the team directly below them. Their next fixture is a trip to face Glenavon on Tuesday night, a key match in their battle to move up the standings.

Manager Paul Doolin will be looking for a response from his squad, who have now lost three of their last five league outings. The team's home form has been a particular concern, with just two wins recorded at Shamrock Park all season. Key players like Kennedy, who now has five league goals, will be central to turning that record around in the coming weeks.

Linfield defender Isaac Baird, a former Portadown youth player, highlighted the difficulty of the win at Shamrock Park. "Portadown's a very difficult place to come to...I've never actually won here, even at Glenavon," Baird said on the club's social media. The 22-year-old, who played in central defence, added the team would "take the aches and pains" after three away games in seven days. Portadown, 12th in the Premiership with 8 points from 14 games, host Ballymena United next.
